<p><em>Richard Joseph “Dick” Campbell</em> was born on February 5, 1938 in Philadelphia, PA. His parents were Richard W. and Dorothy C. Campbell. Dick, as he was known by his classmates, graduated from Lower Merion High School in Ardmore, PA. While there, he was an outstanding running back, an accomplishment which resulted in induction into its Football Hall of Fame in 2012. Because of his athletic ability, as well as his academic achievements, he was recruited by the United States Military Academy and entered with the Class of 1960. Although a knee injury during plebe year ended his football career, Dick excelled as a cadet, both academically and militarily, As a result, he was selected to be the commander of his cadet company for his last year.<br />Dick chose Infantry as his branch and, upon graduation, reported to Fort Benning, GA for the basic course, Jump School, and Ranger School. Accompanying Dick was his bride, the former Susan Robinson. After Benning, they went to the Canal Zone, where Dick served in the 508th Airborne Infantry Battalion, eventually commanding Company C, a singular achievement for a first lieutenant. During that tour he participated in President John Kennedy’s protective detail during his visit to Costa Rica. Dick and Sue’s first two sons, Doug and David, were born in Panama.<br />At the end of his tour in Panama, Dick resigned to begin a business career. He joined AT&T in a management position and during that employment completed a Master of Science degree in Industrial Management under a Sloan Fellowship at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business. He also graduated from the Executive Market Management Program at the Wharton School of Business. He later worked for Cisco and Harris Corporation, reaching the vice-presidential level. Dick organized his own telecommunication consulting firm in 1980, a company that continues today. Throughout those years and into retirement, Dick stayed in shape, mainly playing tennis.<br />Two more sons, Eric and Jeff, rounded out the family, which settled in Marietta, GA early in Dick’s business career. He was a devoted family man and was especially proud of Sue’s ranking in duplicate bridge. The seven grandchildren were a source of joy to Dick. Sue and three of their sons live in the Atlanta area. Some years ago, Dick volunteered to work for homeless veterans through St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Marietta, providing renovated bicycles and backpacks filled with necessities, a task which continued until his death.<br />Dick Campbell was a proud, loyal member of the Long Gray Line. He never missed an Army-Navy football game, attended class reunions, and kept in touch with classmates. He was a true gentleman and a great friend.<br /><em>— Phil Blake, roommate</em></p>
