Colonel William Wiley “Bill” Brown (USA, Retired), of Hanover, MD, died April 17, 2018. The husband of Sandra M. Brown, he was born February 9, 1934 in Jackson, MS to Thomas Monte Brown and Louella Pullen Brown. Bill was a proud graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1955. He achieved his Bachelor of Science degree at West Point and later earned a Master of Science in Geodetic Sciences from The Ohio State University in Columbus, OH. Additionally, Bill graduated from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College and the Army War College and completed several professional military courses throughout his career: Engineer Officer Advanced, Nuclear Weapons Employment, Ballistic Missile Staff, and National Security Management.

Bill served in the Army Corps of Engineers and was stationed in many locations across the United States and the world. Over the course of his career, Bill was awarded numerous military medals: Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, two Meritorious Service Medals, Bronze Star Medal, and two Legion of Merit Medals.

A lesser-known fact was that Bill has two DD-214s. In 1958 Bill separated from the Army as a first lieutenant and joined his father in the insurance industry in Montgomery, AL. After less than a year in the business Bill decided that the insurance business was not for him, and he was welcomed back and recommissioned into the Army and sent to The Ohio State University to earn his master’s degree in geodetic sciences.

Following the completion of his graduate work, Bill was sent to various locations in South America and the South Pacific to study the earth’s gravity. Upon his return Bill furthered his studies at Ohio State before the family relocated to Fort Belvoir, VA to further his education with the Engineer Officer Advanced Course. In 1968 Bill went to Vietnam as an engineering battalion executive officer. Following his service in Vietnam, Bill and the family headed to Fort Leavenworth, KS for a year at U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. Next, Bill and the family headed to Heidelberg, Germany, where Bill became the battalion commander for a mapping battalion in Schwetzingen, Germany. While in Heidelberg, Bill also served at the Army Headquarters. Upon returning from Germany, Bill spent a year in Arlington, VA at the Military Personnel Center before heading to the Army War College in Carlisle, PA. Bill attended as a student and then stayed on the staff at the Army War College for two additional years. Bill was next assigned as the district engineer for the Charleston District in Charleston, SC. Following his time in Charleston, Bill was then assigned to First Army Headquarters at Fort Meade, MD. Upon completing over 27 years of service Bill retired from active duty in the U.S. Army as a colonel in 1983. Bill and Sandra settled in Hanover.

Following his retirement from the Army, Bill joined Ford Aerospace, which was acquired by BDM Corporation and eventually became part of Northrop Grumman. There, he served as a professional logistic engineer, program manager, and the director of space applications supporting numerous projects for NASA, including launch support activities for the Hubble Telescope in 1990. Bill entered full retirement in 1996.

Bill met his bride-to-be, Sandra H. Mathers of Wellsboro, PA, in 1957 while stationed at Schofield Barracks, Oahu, HI. They married in June 1958. Bill and Sandra enjoyed a long, rich life together with their two sons, family, and many good friends. They were very active in the Fort Meade Main Post Chapel, where Bill was an usher and member of the church finance committee for many years. They developed a love for the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, fine dining, and traveling to see family, friends, and classmates. One of his greatest joys was supporting Sandra’s love of quilting. He accompanied her to many shows, lots of quilt shops, and road trips to various quilting events. Nothing made him happier than watching her share her quilting with the grandchildren. Whether she was creating quilts for the children to snuggle in or to take to college, together they were weaving their love into each stitch, spreading warmth and comfort with the family. The year of Bill’s passing, Bill and Sandra had been looking forward to celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary with their families. Bill was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Margery Fulton. Bill leaves behind his wife, Sandra M. Brown, their two sons and their families: Thomas Brown (NC), his wife, Carole and their three children— Alexander and his wife, Mia, Christina, and Michelle; and Timothy Brown (MD), his wife, Lisa, and their two children, Collin and Cameron.

Bill’s remains were buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery on April 23, 2019 in Section 82, Grave 145. The ceremony was attended by numerous family, friends and classmates.
