Lieutenant Colonel Robert Busill Tully Jr. (USA, Retired) passed away on November 17, 2022 surrounded by his family in their Cottage Grove, OR home.

Born to a proud military family at Fort Knox, KY on July 15, 1950, Bob was the son of Colonel Robert B. Tully Sr. and Patricia D. Tully. As an Army brat, Bob moved frequently all over the world and graduated from Aberdeen High School, MD. Prior to attending the U.S. Military Academy, Bob attended the USMA Prep School, where many of his Academy friendships were born. In the summer 1969, during his Beast Barracks, the U.S. landed astronauts on the moon. At West Point, Bob was in E-4 and participated in the Outdoor Sportsmen’s Club and Riding Club.

For 20 years following graduation, Bob honorably served his country in the Infantry, with tours in Panama, Alaska, Germany and in the first Gulf War, serving with the 3rd Armored Division. During this time, he also earned a master’s in financial management from the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, CA. It was at Fort Benning, GA that he met his loving wife of 44 years, Lieutenant Colonel Patricia Galeher Tully (USA, Retired). Bob and Tricia had three children. After retiring from the military, Bob earned an MBA from the University of Oregon and settled in Cottage Grove.

Bob was active in the Cottage Grove community. He served on the South Lane School District Finance Advisory Committee and was a fundraiser for the Cottage Grove Family Relief Nursery.

Those who knew Bob knew he was happiest on a trout stream, fly rod in hand. An avid reader and outdoorsman, Bob enjoyed traveling the world with his wife, family, and friends to pursue his passions for hunting and history. A quiet man, he will be remembered for his insightful and intelligent conversations and the deep and lasting friendships he built throughout his many adventures. His life was full of wonderful stories, and he will be greatly missed by those who got to make those stories with him.

Bob is survived by his wife, Patricia; their children: Robert, Carolyn, and Emily; granddaughter Lauren; and his three siblings: Charles Tully, Michael Tully, and Elizabeth (Betsy) Simoff. Bob is interred at the Willamette National Cemetery.

Bob adapted to life at the academy with, for him, a minimum of difficulty. Although Bob is one of those individuals who always seems to get the low card in the deck, he always manages to come out ahead by a combination of luck and hard work. No doubt he will continue to do so after graduation.
