<div>
Dear Son,</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
As I look back with pride on your life, most of which was spent in the military service, I remember your cadet years-how you enjoyed vinging in the choir all four years, the good friends you made, and staying in the upper half of your class made us so proud of you!</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
Then you graduated, married and went to your first post in Puerto Rico where your daughter, Barrie Lea, was born. We didn't get to see much of you after that—what with attending the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, then serving as Assistant Professor of Military Science at Stanford University, and then to Germany as Chief of Operations, Seventh U.S. Army, where your second daughter, Dana Lynn, was born. How like you to invite all the bachelors to your home for their Holiday dinner!</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
Being separated from you was hard for your Dad and me, and we were so glad when you were made Chief of Human Factors Research Division, Office, Chief of Research and Development, Department of the Army, The Pentagon, Washington, D.C., so we could see you more often. But soon Vietnam, and then retirement and living nearby. It was good to see you and your brother Howard together after years of separation.</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
We could see your health failing even before Marion died. I’m glad we were able to honor your wish Son, to be buried at West Point near your roommate. Your last words to me, "I love you, Mother,” mean much to me as do the beautiful words of the poem, “Be Still.”</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
When you doubt the lovely silence</div>
<div>
Of a quiet wooded place</div>
<div>
When you doubt the path of silver</div>
<div>
Of some moonlit water space</div>
<div>
When you doubt the winds a blowing</div>
<div>
Flash of lightning, glistening rain</div>
<div>
Sun or starlight, heavens above you</div>
<div>
On the land or bounding main</div>
<div>
When you doubt the sleep of loved ones</div>
<div>
Deep beneath some precious sod </div>
<div>
Listen to a soft voice saying</div>
<div>
Be still and know that I am God!</div>
<div>
</div>
