Message from USMA Superintendent

  LTG Darryl Williams ’83

On March 27, LTG Darryl Williams ’83 gave an update on the situation at West Point. The top priority at the Academy is the well-being of the entire West Point community. Visit WestPoint.edu for the latest information on the efforts at West Point during this global pandemic.

Remote Learning Activated for Cadets

  USMA 2020

One of the biggest challenges arising from the recent coronavirus situation was to enable remote learning for USMA cadets in order to maintain continuity in academics. Under the leadership of the Dean, BG Cindy Jebb ’82, a revised operating policy now governs classroom procedures such as attendance, grading, and additional instruction. The faculty are finding creative solutions quickly. One example is the Latin American History course taught by Liliane Delva ’08. Cadets were assigned to deliver oral presentations via a collaboration platform on a country they had selected earlier in the semester. This presentation on the Dominican Republic is a great example of how cadets are responding to this new method of instruction.

Distant Learning: Morgan ’98 Teaches Cadets from Space

  Astronaut Morgan ’98

On March 24, USMA’s Department of Geography & Environmental Engineering hosted a Facebook Live video conference with NASA Astronaut COL Andrew Morgan ‘98 answering questions posed by cadets. The discussion covered a wide range of topics, from how he has applied his West Point experience in his career, to scientific and general questions about space exploration, to advice on being a cadet. Morgan is currently serving aboard the International Space Station. Watch video.

Founders Day 2020

Founders Day - CPT Jason Pak

While many Founders Day events did not get to take place this spring, we appreciate the heartfelt message from Tony Gates ’81 reminding us that we don’t need big events to remind us that, “West Point is in your heart.” Cadets celebrated  the annual Founders Day Corps Dinner on February 27, with guest speaker CPT Jason Pak ’11, who received a Purple Heart after losing both his legs when he stepped on a roadside bomb while leading a foot patrol in Afghanistan in 2012.

Army Hockey Coach Brian Riley Reflects On ‘What If’

  Army Hockey Coach Brian Riley

Despite Army Hockey's challenge of recruiting for a service academy, there was something magical going on at West Point this season for Brian Riley’s Black Knights of the Hudson. “I remember early in the year, maybe in October/November, looking around and saying to myself, ‘This group can do something special,’” Riley said. His gut feelings proved true as the team posted 13 wins before the end of the calendar year, including emotional victories over Union College and AIC as well as road sweeps at Holy Cross and Canisius. An out-of-conference conquest of UNH vaulted the Cadets into the USCHO Poll, making for a well-deserved New Year's celebration up at West Point. Read more.
