Happy Birthday to Our Oldest Grad

COL (R) Francis “Bud” Newcomer ’39

WPAOG and the Long Gray Line would like to congratulate COL (R) Francis “Bud” Newcomer ’39, our oldest living graduate, on leading a dynamic life and reaching a milestone 105th birthday! Newcomer’s grandfather (1886) and father (1913) were both graduates of USMA, and he spent five years of his early childhood at West Point while his father taught mathematics. Commissioned in 1939 in the Coast Artillery, Colonel Newcomer retired in 1967, commenting in his 30th Reunion yearbook, “I have had my share of traveling throughout the world. In the process I have acquired an ever increasing awareness of the good fortune in being born a citizen of the United States.” After retirement from the Army, Newcomer, his wife Jackie and their four children initially moved to Pennsylvania, where he led various long-range planning efforts in the corporate sector. Newcomer is the second member of the LGL to reach his 105th birthday. Happy Birthday, Bud!
